When photographing young children you need to know to ensure that they feel comfortable and safe. If they are your children, then, of course, is not a problem, but it may cause some difficulties if you’re shooting your friends child.
The child will pick up at our discomfort is much easier than other adults so if you do not like children’s company, then you can think again, before proceeding to the field of digital photography.
Top 5 tips for photographing children:
1. Just because you’re willing to take a photograph of the child does not mean that they are ready and willing! You may have to trick them into thinking that it was a fun game to play them. Some of the support side, such as bubble blowing, or soft toys. Often toys with some movement or noise are the most useful, as they will emotion reaction of the child, which you can grab if you’re fast enough!
2. Make sure you are familiar with the camera settings. This may seem obvious, but if you suddenly stop when the child is happy to play to figure out the settings on your camera, you lose time, maybe forever. So make sure you set the camera for the session, and are happy to adapt if necessary. Initially, you can simply use the environment to photograph the children, but as you become more advanced, you may wish to provide lighting setup. This may consist of three light setup – consisting of the main light fill light and background light. If you use the background to keep the child at least four feet from the background, if possible, as it eliminates shadows and prevents the background of competing with your subject.
3. If you are photographing friends or clients of the child asking the parents what kind of things their child will react. You can only have a short period in which to photograph the child, that all information will be vital to the success of the session. Provide some support for a child to learn, for example, a box or some dressing up clothes
4. Remember the children to concentrate, so you may have to stop for a short period for a child to be re-located or subdue a favorite toy or cuddle with her parents. At all times you must remain relaxed and the child and parents will feel uncomfortable. This will not give the best atmosphere for a successful photography!
